Get a Kit: School

The Point

Students and staff may be forced to shelter at the school due external events, incidents or weather. This could be for multiple hours to an overnight extension. It would be both wise and prudent to have basic survial and sheltering supplies availalbe for both staff and students. Especially younger childen. The power and water utilities could both be absent. These are eventualities that schools should prepare for.

Do This

  •  School staff, students and parents are strongly encouraged to create a Personal Preparedness Kit to be kept in the each classroom for each K-6th student. (See suggested list below for Elementary students.)
  • Basic preparedness items are inexpensive and can make a significant difference in the sheltering experience
  • School staff are encouraged  to create a Preparedness Kit to keep in their classrooms that have basic survival necessities
  • Every school should build a school emergency supply cache.

Student Kit

While budgets may not provide emergency items to give to each student, it may be useful to encourage students to bring their own and have the teacher store the items in the classroom, or the student could keep it in a locker, if a locker is provided. Students should consider items that meet their own individual basic needs. The kit needs to be realitively small and effecient, as space is limited. The school may consider storing extra supplies in an emergency preparedness cache to meet the basic needs of the entire student body and staff. Students can use the Disaster Supply Kit list for ideas.

Schools that form a Teen CERT Program may have students trained in the Basic CERT Course and assemble a kit to support basic CERT operations at school. Consider these Suggested CERT Kit Items.

Staff Kit

The school staff may also consider bringing their own items to meet their own needs if they have to stay at the school for an extended period of time. Staff can use the Disaster Supply Kit list for ideas.

Staff that have taken the Basic CERT training become an asset to the schools response effort. Staff may assemble a Basic CERT Kit they could bring to school.

Employee home preparedness best practices

School staff are considered "Critical Employees" or "Essential Workers" due to their inherent responsiblity to be at school, and assist with essentail school functions. Therefore, it might be necessary for school employees to be well prepared at home, so as not to be stranded at home and not be able to respond to their school duties. Home and family always come first. But school employees need to be prepared at home, in light of their essential need to be at the school. See the Be Ready Family page for ideas on preparedness at home.

Emergency Supply Cache

Consider storing an emergency supply cache somewhere in or near the school that can be accessed in the event of an emergency. In the event of infrastructure failure, like power, water, sewer, gas, etc., consider the supplies you may need in order to operate without the infrastructure. In the event of an order to Shelter-In-Place (seal the room in the event of a hazardous material release, or stay in the facility to protect against extreme weather), Lock Down, or Lock Out, consider what may be needed do do those actions. Supplies will need to be acquired, stored, inventoried and made accessible.

  • Acquire: Determine what you need, where you can find it, and how to procure it.
  • Store: Needs to be organized and maintained.
  • Inventory: Include the type of resource, its owner, location, and procurement procedures. Keep inventory maintained.
  • Accessibility: The inventory and the supplies need to be made accessible to those who need it when they need it. Make inventory available in different formats at different locations.

Common items to consider for a school disaster supply cache may include:

  • Water
  • Food
  • First aid supplies
  • Blankets
  • Hygiene and sanitation supplies
  • Flashlights
  • AED's
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • and more...

Consider your student body and staff while considering what items you may include in your schools emergency supply cache.
